The UFO phenomenon, shrouded in mystery throughout the modern era of American science — and still today — has received mixed treatments from historians of science. The spectrum among objective historians to write on the subject has generally been characterized on one side by the view that UFOs may constitute an anomalous phenomenon — a position that suggests the possibility of the extraterrestrial hypothesis of UFOs, which seeks to explain UFOs as extraterrestrial crafts — and on the other side by the contention that all UFO cases can be explained prosaically in terms of conventional science.
Greek philosophy is as brilliant as every other creation of the Greek intellect. The line of thinkers which that little nation produced in three centuries has no parallel in the history of thought, and every conceivable variety or cast of speculation made its appearance. But Greek thought became distorted by religion. It turned away from science to “spiritual truths”. It has shown for all time how futile and mischievous is that high sounding appeal for us to turn from science to “spiritual truths”.
Skepticism, by the general philosophical definition, is the point of view that confronts every philosophical thesis (many times, even the non-philosophical) with rational thought and doubtful criticism. The word derives from the Greek verb «σκέπτομαι (sképtomè) = to think or to think about» whose action causes thinking and thought (based on logic, at least at the advanced level) which, in the context of skepticism is aimed toward criticism and dispute. Finally, skepticism concludes with the acceptance or rejection of a position and also leads to the classification and separation of different positions.
The relationship between science and religion has engendered heated controversy. This debate has its roots in the historic conflict between the advocates of reason and the disciples of faith. On the current scene, there is a vocal hallelujah chorus singing praises to the mutual harmony and support of these two realms or "magisteria." I have serious misgivings about this alleged rapprochement, but I wish to focus on only one aspect of the controversy, and ask: To what extent should we apply skepticism to religious claims?
